Job Description

At Hyperion Robotics, we are on a mission to bring sustainability and automation to one of the largest and most conservative sectors, the construction industry. Using robotic 3D printing technology and low-carbon upcycled materials we are rethinking the way construction elements are designed and built. We collaborate with leading clients in the construction, industrial and infrastructure sectors and we are backed by some of the top investors in Europe. Learn more about us here. We are looking for a Materials Lab Intern to support the daily work of our materials laboratory. This is a hands-on role where you will work directly with concrete materials, laboratory equipment, and testing procedures. You will help prepare mixes, run tests, record results, maintain lab organization, and support the team in developing reliable materials for robotic 3D printing. After an onboarding period, you will gradually take on more responsibility and become an important part of the lab’s day-to-day operations. This internship is well suited for someone who enjoys practical work, pays attention to detail, and is eager to learn about concrete technology, material testing, and additive manufacturing. As the company grows, there may also be an opportunity to extend the role beyond the initial internship period. What It Means In Practice: Preparing concrete mixes by hand and using mixing equipment, following design recipes with high precision. Running standard tests on fresh and hardened concrete and learning to interpret what the results are telling you about the material. Preparing raw materials for 3D concrete printing, including grinding biochar with ball mill operation. Supporting day-to-day lab work, including lab cleanliness, equipment calibration, and raw materials inventory. Helping maintain a safe, well-organised working environment, including COSHH compliance and safe chemical handling practices. As you grow further into the role, you will: Take increasing ownership of the materials lab and raw materials inventory. Support multiple research projects simultaneously with increasing autonomy. Contribute observations and improvement ideas during project reviews based on your close day-to-day contact with the material. To Succeed In This Role, We Expect: You are a final-year Bachelor’s or vocational school student in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with a clear interest in construction materials. You have hands-on lab experience from coursework, projects, or personal work, and understand what it means to handle powder materials, run tests, and record data properly. You have a genuine interest in concrete and cementitious materials, beyond only completing coursework requirements. You enjoy hands-on, precise, and tangible work, and take satisfaction in consistency, cleanliness, and detail. You are comfortable working in a hands-on materials lab environment where cementitious powders, biochar, and other raw materials can create dust, and you are willing to follow PPE and safe handling procedures at all times. You are comfortable raising problems early rather than hiding them. You are curious and want to understand why something happens, not just follow instructions. You can communicate clearly in English, whether describing observations, asking good questions, or documenting findings so others can build on them. You are seriously considering a career in construction materials or additive manufacturing. What we offer: Paid internship. Possibility to extend the contract. Access to company benefits. Direct daily collaboration and learning with senior scientists and team leads across real funded projects. The chance to build material intuition that cannot be learned from papers alone. Exposure to 3D concrete printing at the frontier of construction technology. A small, flat team where your work is visible, your observations are heard, and your improvement is recognised. Sounds exciting? Send your CV and motivation letter in English via our career website. We are continuously reviewing applications and will fill the role as soon as we find the right candidate. Hyperion Robotics embraces diversity and equal opportunity. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We believe that the more inclusive we are, the better our company will be.
