Job Description

atNorth is a leading Nordic data center company providing cost-effective, scalable high-density colocation and built-to-suit services to industry-leading organizations across Iceland, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. With sustainability at our core, our data centers run on renewable energy and are designed according to circular economy principles. Through innovative design, power efficiency, and intelligent operations, we deliver reliable, secure, and high-performance infrastructure. Headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland, atNorth operates eight data centers across the Nordics, with additional sites under development in Finland, Denmark, and Sweden. We combine world-class technology with a people-first culture built on collaboration, ownership, and trust, empowering our teams to grow, take responsibility, and make a real impact. By joining our international team, you will help shape the future of sustainable digital infrastructure. Mechanical SME at atNorth Are you a seasoned mechanical engineering expert with a passion for delivering and operating world-class data centre infrastructure? At atNorth, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of sustainable, high-performance data centres across the Nordics. As the technical authority for mechanical systems and critical cooling infrastructure, you will provide expert guidance across both project delivery and operations, ensuring technical excellence, engineering integrity, and operational reliability throughout the asset lifecycle. This is a unique opportunity to combine deep technical expertise with strategic influence, working closely with Operations, Design, Development, and industry-leading specialists to drive innovation in one of the fastest-growing sectors in Europe. Key responsibilities: Act as the technical authority and signatory for mechanical engineering designs, calculations, specifications, standards, and operational procedures. Provide expert leadership across critical mechanical infrastructure, including cooling systems, chillers, evaporative and DX cooling technologies, water distribution systems, fire suppression systems, and associated controls. Support design reviews, engineering assurance, commissioning activities, and technical handovers to ensure operational readiness and long-term reliability. Develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, operational procedures, and best-practice frameworks across atNorth's Nordic data centre portfolio. Collaborate closely with Design, Development, and Operations teams to ensure seamless integration of new infrastructure and effective transition into operations. Lead technical investigations, troubleshooting efforts, and root-cause analyses for complex mechanical incidents and performance issues. Serve as the primary mechanical engineering advisor for internal stakeholders, clients, consultants, and vendors. Evaluate emerging technologies and industry developments, including liquid cooling, energy efficiency solutions, and advanced thermal-management technologies. Drive training, technical mentoring, and knowledge sharing across operational and engineering teams to strengthen capability and consistency. Support asset lifecycle planning, maintenance strategies, resilience improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives across the portfolio. Your profile: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline. Minimum 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, critical infrastructure, or mission-critical environments, including progression into senior technical leadership roles. Extensive experience delivering data centre engineering projects, with deep expertise in cooling and thermal-management systems, including chillers, liquid cooling technologies, water distribution systems, and other critical mechanical infrastructure. Strong understanding of commissioning, system integration, operational readiness, maintenance strategies, and asset lifecycle management. Proven experience acting as a technical authority, reviewing and approving engineering designs, technical documentation, specifications, and operational standards. Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences. A collaborative and solutions-oriented mindset, combined with the confidence to challenge, influence, and drive high engineering standards across multiple sites, projects, and regions. Experience with sustainable cooling solutions and energy-efficient data centre technologies is considered an advantage. Fluent English and willingness to travel across the Nordic region as required.
