Job Description
The Kotka Education Department is recruiting for two school coach positions for a fixed term from August 10, 2026, to June 5, 2027. The positions are based at Kotkansaari and Käpylä schools at the start of employment. The school coach's weekly working hours are 35 hours. Kotkansaari School is an approximately 660-student comprehensive school operating at two locations. The Haukkavuori location serves grades 1-5, and the Keskuskoulu location serves grades 6-9. In addition to general education groups, Kotkansaari School has special education groups and a flexible basic education group. The school also offers music-oriented education and bilingual instruction (English-Finnish). Käpylä School is an approximately 400-student school with about 50 staff members, located near the center of Karhula. The school includes music classes, a physical education class, and three special classes, in addition to basic education groups. The school coach is present in daily school life and in school encounters, acting as a low-threshold contact person, engaging in conversations and listening. They support group formation at the school community, classroom, and individual levels. The coach helps foster students' sense of safety and attachment to school through their activities. The goal is to support students in recognizing their strengths and resources in daily school activities, celebrating even small successes. The coach plans and implements practical support measures based on students' needs to prevent school-related stress. The school coach participates in the school's community work and development efforts. The role includes developing the school coach position and a new operational model in collaboration with the education administration and school staff. Successful performance in the role requires understanding students' diverse needs, flexibility, solution-oriented thinking, and good cooperation skills. The work requires skills in working with challenging students, quick response, and good anticipation. The role also requires classroom management skills, team-building abilities, and good interpersonal skills. The coach must be capable of responsible, high-quality, and goal-oriented planning, implementation, and evaluation, with good situational awareness. We require a suitable qualification in education, guidance, social, or health fields, or an equivalent lower university degree. Experience working in schools is considered an advantage. Certificates demonstrating eligibility will be checked during the interview. Before confirmation of employment, the selected candidate must present a criminal background check related to working with children, as required by law (504/2002). The position is subject to a four (4) month probation period. Salary is according to KVTES. The position-specific salary for a 35-hour workweek is €2,337.22/month. The fixed-term contract is part of a pilot project for a new operational model. Applications are primarily submitted through the recruitment system.
