Doctoral Researcher (U-KNOW-project, focus on open-source investigation in the Ukraine or Palestine conflicts) / Väitöskirjatutkija - Tampereen yliopisto - Tampere, Finland

We are now offering a fully funded PhD position in International Relations, to conduct research on the U-KNOW research project which investigates the use of open source investigation/intelligence in relation to the Ukraine and Palestine conflicts. The position is for 3 years starting from 1 September 2026. The doctoral researcher will pursue a doctoral degree under the supervision of PI Dr. Rune Saugmann as part of the project Understanding International Knowledge Practice and Open Source Images (U-KNOW). The project explores visual open-source knowledge about conflicts, develops new methods for open-source conflict research, and creates conceptual tools for understanding conflict knowledge in relation to geopolitical interests. The candidate should have a master's degree in international relations, digital media studies, or related fields, with knowledge of digital conflict dynamics and qualitative/visual methods. The position includes research, public engagement, and some teaching. The salary starts at approximately €2,774/month, with performance-based increases.
