Job Description

At Hyperion Robotics, we are building advanced 3D concrete printing systems to make construction more sustainable, scalable, and intelligent. Our Tech R&D team plays a critical role in turning that vision into reliable real-world systems — designing, building, commissioning, and supporting the automation behind our 3D printer systems in Finland, the UK, and future deployments across Europe. We are now looking for a (Lead) Automation Engineer to join us in Espoo, Finland. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys designing and building electrical and automation systems from the ground up together with the team — from architecture, component selection, and electrical topology to PLC software, documentation, testing, and commissioning. You will work in a collaborative team environment with daily stand-ups, regular technical discussions, and shared problem-solving across disciplines. This role is also ideal for someone who is already strong in automation engineering and has the potential to grow into a future Team Lead role as the team expands. You will not join as a people manager on day one, but you should be excited by the idea of gradually taking on more ownership, coaching others, and eventually leading a small team of 2-3 members after 8-10 months. Building and owning electrical and automation systems for Hyperion’s 3D concrete printing solutions in Finland and future European deployments Creating scalable and robust hardware and software architecture for industrial systems built from the ground up Designing electrical topology, electrical schematics, and control system layouts for new and evolving machine systems Programming PLCs using IEC61131 languages, especially Structured Text and, where relevant, Function Block Diagram Supporting HMI development, safety-related automation functions, and reliable communication between automation devices Creating and maintaining clear technical documentation, including electrical schematics, cabinet layouts, testing protocols, architecture documentation, and commissioning handover materials Supporting wiring, testing, commissioning, upgrades, and troubleshooting together with the wider engineering team Leading or supporting root cause analysis for automation-related issues and implementing practical corrective actions Participating actively in daily stand-ups and technical routines, giving clear updates on progress, blockers, risks, and next steps Helping improve development, testing, documentation, and handover practices so systems are easier to maintain and scale over time. To Succeed In This Role, We Expect: You have a degree in Automation Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. You have solid professional experience in industrial automation, ideally in machinery, equipment, or R&D-heavy environments. You have a strong electrical background that extends into automation engineering. You have hands-on experience designing electrical schematics, electrical topology, and practical control system layouts. You are confident with IEC61131 programming, especially Structured Text and Function Block Diagram. You have worked with established PLC platforms and can transfer your knowledge across systems. You have experience with industrial communication protocols and control system integration. You can create and maintain structured technical documentation for both electrical and automation scope. You are comfortable with hands-on engineering work when needed, including testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and occasional wiring support as part of the team. You communicate clearly in both verbal and written form, and can explain technical progress, blockers, risks, decisions, and documentation in a way that other engineers and stakeholders can follow. You have experience owning the technical scope of a system, subsystem, or project — for example as a lead engineer or technical owner — and can work independently after onboarding while creating structure and ensuring maintainability, safety, and long-term reliability. It would be a plus if: You have experience with Beckhoff components and TwinCAT. You have experience with safety PLCs, machine safety validation, or CE-related automation design. You have experience with KUKA robots or HMI engineering. What we offer: Competitive compensation package, including benefits and stock options. Additional paid holiday weeks during your first year of employment. Occupational healthcare through Terveystalo. EUR 300 per year for dental care. EUR 200 per year for leisure activities. A hands-on role at the core of Hyperion’s 3D printing technology. The opportunity to own meaningful automation scope from design to commissioning and support. A hybrid role based in Espoo, with full relocation support for candidates joining from outside Finland. The chance to work on systems deployed in Finland, the UK, and future projects across Europe. A growing engineering environment where your improvements to documentation, testing, and ways of working will have visible impact. A clear path to grow into broader technical ownership and, over time, a future Team Lead role. Sounds exciting? Send your CV and cover letter in English via our career website. We are continuously reviewing applications and will fill the role as soon as we find the right candidate. We embrace diversity and equal opportunity. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills.
