Job Description
We are seeking a LisäVALO teacher for Simonkallion School for grades 1-6 for the 2026-2027 school year. You can have a background as a Finnish language teacher, classroom teacher, or special education teacher. The position is aimed at teachers interested in language-aware pedagogy, supporting language learners, and developing instructional structures. LisäVALO (additional preparatory instruction in basic education) is part of the basic education system. Its goal is to strengthen students' basic language skills and support them in reaching at least A2 level in the instructional language. As a LisäVALO teacher, you will instruct LisäVALO students in everyday school activities (simultaneous or co-teaching, small groups, additional lessons, or individual guidance), serve as the responsible teacher for the LisäVALO program, and act as the language awareness coordinator. You will coordinate the instruction arrangements for LisäVALO students in collaboration with preparatory class teachers and other staff, and develop language-aware pedagogy at the school and city levels. The role includes teaching hours as well as dedicated development sessions for planned development work. The final teaching hours will be based on your educational background. For example, a classroom teacher may have 22 hours of teaching and 2 hours of development work. LisäVALO refers to additional preparatory instruction within basic education. It is intended for students whose language skills are not yet sufficient to succeed in basic education after preparatory instruction or its completion. LisäVALO is not a separate school form or class but a support measure integrated into the regular school day. LisäVALO is aimed at students whose language skills fall below the A2 level after preparatory instruction and who may also have deficiencies in school readiness skills. LisäVALO is implemented flexibly during basic education, based on the student's needs. Instruction may include co-teaching, separate LisäVALO lessons, small group instruction, personal guidance, or homework support. LisäVALO does not remove the student from the regular education but supports their participation. Simonkallion School is a primary school with approximately 550 students, recently renovated, with modern facilities. Our staff includes 36 qualified teachers, 8 teaching assistants, a counselor, a school nurse, a school psychologist, and other personnel. We work in grade-level teams with weekly collaboration time. The school hosts regional music classes for grades 3-6 and two regional preparatory groups. We are Prokoulu and use a solution-focused approach to behavior management. Student well-being is central to our activities, and we actively promote school and staff well-being throughout the year. Classes include weekly well-being lessons to practice social and emotional skills. We have an active Kivatiimi team working on bullying prevention and conflict resolution. If this position interests you, please submit an application. Selected candidates will be invited for a video interview, followed by an in-person interview in early June. Why choose Vantaa?
