In this role, you will support criminal investigations in situations where understanding the overall picture is crucial. You will act as a coordinator in the Field Services team at the Criminal Technical Laboratory (RTL) of the National Bureau of Investigation, combining information, expertise, and research solutions to support investigations. The work requires the ability to operate amid uncertainty and make justified decisions as investigations progress. This position suits those motivated by objective expert work and providing reliable information. RTL's coordination functions as a center for general knowledge in forensic science and as a key support for criminal investigations across the country. It integrates laboratory expertise, research capabilities, and external expertise into technical and tactical criminal investigations. Daily tasks include supporting criminal investigations by identifying research needs, evaluating different research options, and coordinating investigations and experts. Coordination is especially beneficial when research is outside RTL’s own offerings or when cases require managing multiple investigations, samples, and experts. The work involves viewing investigation needs holistically—for example, prioritizing investigations and samples, arranging investigation sequences, and reporting results. The key skills include understanding complex situations and supporting appropriate solutions, both in individual challenging cases and in everyday criminal investigations. The position requires an impartial and analytical approach. The goal of technical research is to produce reliable and objective information for criminal investigations. Emphasis is placed on healthy skepticism, identifying alternative explanations, and assessing the justification of different interpretations, even when available information is limited or evolving. As the coordination role develops, tasks will include evaluating the impact of investigations and developing technical forensic methods. The work requires the ability to seek and develop new approaches and solutions where ready-made models are not always available.
