Job Description

We are looking for a guidance counselor - come and do meaningful work with children and young people! In the student welfare guidance services of the Kainuu welfare area, 15 guidance counselors and one head guidance counselor work in preschool, basic education, and secondary education. Guidance counselors support students' daily life, participation, and social well-being. The work is carried out in collaboration with families, schools, other student welfare service providers, and the broader network. Guidance work includes both individual and community-based student welfare services, aimed at strengthening well-being and engagement in studies. As a guidance counselor, your tasks include: - Supporting the well-being, social skills, and functional capacity of children and young people in accordance with the Student and Pupil Welfare Act - Assessing the need for short-term interventions covered by the therapy guarantee - Supporting parenting, and cooperation between home and school - Multidisciplinary collaboration as part of student welfare and with other networks - Providing support and guidance to students for school attendance and studies - Acting as a social services expert within the school and educational community Your working area will be the upper grades of Lehtikangas School and possibly preschool groups from the Lehtikangas area, considering statutory staffing levels. We value equal access and availability of guidance services. We also utilize digital and remote services in accordance with the Kainuu welfare area's strategy. To support your work, we offer supervisory support, orientation, group supervision, and support from a head guidance counselor. There is also another guidance counselor working at Lehtikangas School. We offer collegial support and guidance through regular team meetings. We support professional development and training. Flexible working hours and partial remote work are available. The position requires an autonomous work approach and good skills in teamwork, partnership, and networking. Knowledge of social and educational legislation and social work experience are considered an advantage. We appreciate an active, developmental, and flexible work attitude and a positive outlook. An interest in supporting mental well-being and readiness to refer children and young people to other social and health services when needed are also important. The qualification requirement is a suitable higher education degree. The law on amending the Student and Pupil Act, section 7. The salary is based on the task complexity assessment confirmed by the Kainuu welfare area, amounting to €2010.08 (60% of the guidance counselor’s task-specific salary). The start date is August 10, 2026, or by agreement. Applications are accepted via Kuntarekry. Priority will be given to employees of the Kainuu welfare area who are threatened with redundancy, provided they meet the qualification requirements. The selected candidate must present a criminal background check (Act on Background Checks for Persons Working with Children, 504/2002) before taking up the position. We require vaccination protection in accordance with section 48 of the Infectious Diseases Act.
