Job Description
GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (AI) to help shape and scale the core infrastructure behind GitLab CI. This role involves designing, building, and iterating on AI-assisted CI experiences, setting standards for AI agent portfolios, and responsibly integrating GitLab's Duo Agent Platform into CI workflows at scale. The engineer will improve performance, reliability, and usability for high-volume CI jobs, and lead cross-functional work with product, UX, and infrastructure teams. Key responsibilities include developing AI-powered features, instrumentation, and observability, optimizing backend infrastructure, and writing secure, maintainable Ruby on Rails code. The ideal candidate has strong Ruby on Rails skills, PostgreSQL expertise, experience with high-traffic systems, and a data-driven, responsible approach to AI integration.
