Kajaanin has 12 basic education schools and a total of 14 educational units, each with its own principal. Basic education is part of the Education Sector, led by the Director of Basic Education, which promotes unified practices and pedagogical development. A bilingual education program launched in 2021 combines Finnish and English instruction, providing students with strong language skills in both languages.
