Engineering Manager, Data Foundations - Gitlab - Remote, US

As Engineering Manager at GitLab, you’ll manage and grow a high-performing engineering team within the Data Foundations group, working on a core data platform that ingests, processes, persists, and queries data streams generated across GitLab. We are looking for a leader who can leverage AI to drive non-linear productivity gains across the platform, accelerating our ability to deliver value to our customers. You’ll need deep distributed systems knowledge and be comfortable with architecture of high-throughput, multi-component data systems including ingestion, buffering, enrichment, replication, storage, querying, backpressure handling, and production operations across multiple deployment models. You’ll partner with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Data, and other Engineering teams to evolve a platform that lives inside the product, minimizes external services, and runs across various deployment types. You’ll also lead architecture and execution for both analytics and classic search capabilities, balancing platform depth with customer impact. Your role involves hiring, coaching, and developing engineers, guiding architecture, and ensuring platform reliability, scalability, and operability. You’ll design safe, scalable integrations with the GitLab monolith, including gRPC/Protobuf query paths, and drive operational maturity with observability, metrics, and capacity planning. You’ll collaborate asynchronously across teams to enable customer-facing reporting and AI-driven platform evolution. Requirements include experience managing platform or data systems teams at scale, deep distributed systems expertise, strong backend and platform engineering skills, familiarity with change data capture, event streaming, OLAP data stores, and APIs, and excellent communication skills. Knowledge of search and indexing systems is a plus. You should have a passion for reliability, customer outcomes, and operational excellence.
