Job Description

Do you want to explore how artificial intelligence shapes human thinking, learning, and decision-making in society? We are looking for a doctoral researcher to join LUT University and contribute to research on digitalisation and its societal implications. The Department of Social Sciences is hiring a doctoral researcher in social sciences, specialising in youth reasoning, cognitive biases, and epistemic resilience in AI-mediated societies. The position aims to strengthen research on the digital society and social sustainability through longitudinal, mixed-method study of young people, artificial intelligence, and collective decision-making. We are seeking a curious mind aspiring to an academic career, passionate about continuous learning, and aiming to contribute to socially relevant scientific knowledge. What your work will be like In this position, you will explore how digitalisation and artificial intelligence shape human cognition, learning, and social decision-making, particularly in the context of youth and education. The research focuses on themes such as human–machine interaction, cognitive biases, digital transformation, and AI-mediated environments, aiming to deepen understanding of how people form knowledge and make decisions in technology-rich societies. At LUT, research into social and communication sciences is grounded in understanding society and human activity in relation to global sustainability challenges at the intersection of people and technology. This broader institutional context supports research that connects technological development with social, cognitive, and ethical dimensions of digital transformation. You will focus on completing an article-based doctoral dissertation in English within four years. You will actively participate in a research group and be involved in research projects in various roles. Your responsibilities include analysing and documenting research results, contributing to international scientific publications, and disseminating findings through conference presentations and team meetings. In addition, you will contribute to national and international research projects in close collaboration with your research team. You will publish peer-reviewed articles, participate in international conferences and summer schools, and support dissemination activities such as policy briefs. The position offers the possibility for a three-month research visit to the University of Zurich (IKMZ), Switzerland, to strengthen international collaboration. The role also includes teaching and assisting in teaching for bachelor’s and master’s students, supporting project or research group administration, and helping maintain a media presence (e.g., project web pages). You are required to apply to the LUT Doctoral School for the right to complete doctoral studies within the first two months of the appointment. What we expect from you You have a master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in a relevant field, preferably sociology, psychology, education, media studies, or human–AI interaction. You are also welcome to apply with a background in other social sciences, such as political science, anthropology, communication studies, economics, or humanities, if you are interested in research on digitalisation, youth reasoning, AI-mediated environments, and epistemic resilience. Candidates with a background in computer science or data science are also encouraged to apply, provided they are motivated to work within a social science research context. In addition, the role requires commitment to completing your doctoral studies within the normative duration of the degree. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required. Knowledge of other languages is considered an advantage. We value strong academic writing skills and motivation to contribute to scientific publications during the doctoral studies. Prior publications are not required but are considered an advantage. You are expected to have strong organisational skills and be familiar with research project development and grant applications. Good computer skills and commitment to ethical research practices and are essential. Practical skills in social media and webpage design are considered a merit, as is international academic experience. The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in scientific writing and qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. What we offer We offer an opportunity to launch a successful academic career and become an expert in the field of the dissertation. We also provide encouraging and supportive supervision by the professor and research network. The position will start with a one-year term (including a six-month trial period) and may be extended by up to three years, depending on the progress of your studies and research. The starting date is as soon as possible – preferably by 1 October 2026. The job is based in Lappeenranta. Hybrid work arrangements are possible, although regular on-site presence is required. The hours are flexible, supporting work–life balance. In accordance with the collective agreement for Finnish universities, the position follows a system of 1,612 annual working hours. The salary is based on the Finnish university pay system’s scale for teaching and research staff (requirement level 2). The starting salary is approximately EUR 3,100 per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
