Deck Ratings (Ordinary Seaman (OS) / Able Seaman (AB)) Reports To: A. Bosun Responsibilities A. All ratings in all departments have a duty to ensure the safety and safe working practices of both themselves and the personnel that they are working with. B. They are under the control of the Bosun and carry out duties relating to the safety, navigation, operation, maintenance and security of the ship and all hold, tank, and ballast space cleaning. C. Whilst undertaking Bridge lookout duties, the Rating must report the observation of all other vessels in visual range directly to the OOW. The Rating is required to move around the Bridge to maintain a 360-degree lookout in compliance with Rule 5 (Lookout) of the International Collision Regulations. The Rating should also occasionally confirm visual observations by Radar and check for any visually un-observed targets. A regular check astern of the vessel must be maintained however in Piracy areas, the frequency of these checks must be increased. D. The Ratings should assist in cargo operations as directed by VMT staff but they never have immediate responsibility for any cargo operation at any time E. The Rating should bring any defects to the attention of the Bosun or VMT member and suggest remedial actions required to rectify the same. F. He should actively participate in the vessels Unsafe Act Auditing programme through completion Unsafe and Unsafe Condition reports and in assistance with the Safety Officer. G. He should be fully conversant with Permit to Work systems and the Daily Work Planning procedures. H. In addition he must carry out any lawful command and delegated duty as issued by the Chief Engineer, Master, Chief Officer, Cargo Engineer or delegated OOW. Additionally, the position requires the individual to have prior experience on working on a regasification vessel.
