School Assistant

We are looking for a motivated person to join our community and professional team at Strömbergin School to perform the duties of a school assistant in a classroom for children with the most severe intellectual disabilities. The goal of your work as a school assistant is to guide and support the learner in different stages of the school attendance and learning process, both during school hours and in afternoon activities. In the classroom working by functional areas (TOI), students do not communicate by speech. Therefore, various communication methods are used. Assistive devices are needed, and students sit in wheelchairs and also use standing frames. The work is very care-oriented and extremely physical: work takes place a lot at floor level and there are also plenty of lifts. We value understanding of working with the most severely intellectually disabled. The workday includes, for example, toilet assistance, diaper changes, use of assistive devices, assistance in eating, using a wheelchair, and supporting daily activities. Strömbergin school is a primary school, but in terms of the TOI class, it is a unified basic school. The school operates communally and the team spirit is excellent. Your working time as a school assistant is 38 h 15 min per week. Flat salary 2515.05 €/month, when the working time is 38.25 h/week. In addition, the salary includes possible additions according to KVTES. The flat salary may change according to expertise and level of responsibility. School assistants are employed by the City of Helsinki's Education and Training Division. The place of work is determined based on the available school assistant resources at any given time and may change annually. During school holidays, school assistants and special school assistants work in centralized holiday activities for children with intellectual disabilities and autism. During holidays, the place of work may be another City of Helsinki school. Summer vacation is mainly timed for the closure of the holiday activities. What does the City of Helsinki offer you? Eligibility requirement: Eligibility is a vocational qualification in the guidance of school and morning and afternoon activities, a vocational qualification of a school assistant, or other suitable qualification. In addition, the position requires good oral and written skills in Finnish. The person appointed to the position must submit a register extract concerning themselves as intended by the Act on the Checking of the Criminal Background of Persons Working with Children (504/2002). We consider experience with various alternative communication tools and methods as an advantage.
