About the role

Do you want to help design and build vessels for the most extreme conditions on the planet – including the polar seas? At Helsinki Shipyard, we specialize in tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers, designed and built right here in the heart of Helsinki. Our roots go back to 1865, and since November 2023 we’ve been part of the Canadian Davie Group, further strengthening our role in the global shipbuilding industry. We’re always on the lookout for motivated and skilled professionals to join our HVAC Design team. If you’re interested in future opportunities within the department, we encourage you to leave your open application! 🌍 About The Team Our department is responsible for the design and supplier selection of key onboard systems that support passenger and crew comfort, safety, and other essential ship functions. The HVAC Design team consists of approximately 10 experts from diverse backgrounds. We work closely with other design departments, production, and project organizations across the shipyard. You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary design organization of ~120 people, and a wider shipyard community of ~400 professionals. 💼 What Could Your Role Include? Depending on your experience and interests, you could be working with: - Specific systems (e.g., grey/black water, cooling systems, waste handling) - Design drawings for the basic or detail design phase - Component creation and technical documentation for procurement - Preparing testing programs and supporting production as a system expert - Collaborating with suppliers and other designers to solve complex technical challenges Responsibilities will be tailored based on your background and aspirations. 👤 Who Are We Looking For? We welcome applications from both experienced professionals and junior designers with the motivation to grow. Ideally, you: - Hold a degree in energy engineering, building service technology, naval architecture, or a similar engineering field - Have some experience in design or project-based work (not necessarily in shipbuilding) - Are eager to learn and develop your technical skills in a marine environment - Work well in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team - Have good command of English (spoken and written) Previous experience in ship design is not required – the right mindset and technical curiosity are more important! ⚓ What Do We Offer? - The chance to see your designs come to life – literally, right outside your office window - A meaningful role where your work makes a real impact - A supportive and tight-knit Design organization - A flexible hybrid working model (on-site and remote, depending on project phase) - A unique location at the historic Hietalahti shipyard in central Helsinki - A commitment to environmental responsibility – we participate in joint sea monitoring of Helsinki’s coastal waters “It is so rewarding to see how the product we’ve designed together is assembled piece by piece right outside our windows. The joy of achievement gives a special type of happiness. We did this together!” — Heini Kiuru, Head of HVAC Design 📬 Interested? Send us your open application and CV, and we’ll be in touch when suitable opportunities arise. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself – we review applications regularly. --- As part of the selection process, candidates chosen for the role will undergo a routine medical check, which includes a drug test. For certain roles, a security clearance may also be required.
