About the role

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki is seeking an Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Professor in Veterinary Cell and Molecular Biology. The role is based at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at Campus Vik in Helsinki. The field encompasses cell and molecular biology, translational molecular medicine, and combines basic research with clinical veterinary medicine, playing a central role in the faculty's 'One Health' research profile. The professor supports teaching and research in areas such as pathology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, genetics, and reproduction biology. The successful candidate will lead and develop research and teaching, establishing an internationally competitive multidisciplinary research program and securing external funding. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in biochemistry (cell metabolism) and cell and molecular biology, as well as supervising bachelor's and licentiate theses. A special responsibility involves developing Swedish-language and bilingual education to strengthen students' clinical vocabulary and ability to work as veterinarians in Swedish. Requirements include a degree in veterinary medicine (VMD or equivalent) and a doctoral degree in a relevant field. For the tenure track position, the ability to conduct independent research and motivation for an academic career are required. For the full professor position, high-level scientific competence, experience in leading research groups, and a track record of supervising doctoral students are essential. Fluency in Swedish (C1/C2 level) and English is required; Finnish is an advantage.
