Process Designer

AFRY is seeking a process designer for its energy business who wants to develop through demanding energy-sector projects and take responsibility for process-design work. The role also suits someone at the beginning of their career; the essentials are relevant education, knowledge of process-design fundamentals and motivation to grow in the role. In AFRY's energy business, process design plays a central role in designing energy plants. The process largely determines how a plant operates and provides the basis for the rest of the design work. As a process designer, you will help ensure that the process works as planned and is technically correctly sized. You will work as part of a project group of around ten people alongside specialists from other design disciplines. The role also involves working with clients and equipment suppliers. Projects are long-term and may last for years, giving you the opportunity to follow the design progress and different project stages over an extended period. As you gain experience, your responsibilities will grow, and you can take increasingly independent responsibility for your own design discipline. We offer an international working environment where you can work on energy-sector projects in Finland and abroad; varied and technically challenging projects where no two days are exactly alike; and the opportunity to participate in international projects. Projects and travel needs vary, and the work may occasionally involve travel. Flexible hybrid work is available, although especially at the beginning we expect you to work mainly from the Vantaa office. Your duties include: - Balance and sizing calculations - Preparing process and flow diagrams (PFDs) and designing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) - Specifying and sizing equipment, including process equipment, materials and utilities - Preparing technical procurement specifications - Safety and risk-management analyses as part of process design - Working with equipment suppliers and reviewing technical solutions - Coordinating the tasks of your design discipline as part of the project group We are looking for someone with a suitable technical higher-education degree, for example in process, energy or chemical engineering. You may be an experienced process designer or a recent graduate; what matters is familiarity with the fundamentals of process sizing and design. We expect you to understand process sizing and the basics of process design. For example, you may have carried out process balance calculations or sizing during your studies. You can understand what happens within a process and how mass and energy flows behave. You work analytically and systematically, can work independently and move your tasks forward, and are willing to learn and gradually take on more responsibility. Good collaboration skills are important: although the work includes a great deal of independent design, projects involve close cooperation with other design disciplines, clients and suppliers. You must be fluent in Finnish and English. If a client project requires it, a security clearance may be conducted during employment. An approved security clearance is a prerequisite for continuing the employment.
