The veterinary on-call service is a mixed practice, and the on-call area covers the city of Mikkeli and the municipalities of Hirvensalmi, Kangasniemi, and Mäntyharju. The work of the municipal veterinarian practitioner in Mäntyharju consists of diverse rural mixed practice, focusing on small animal practice, but also including some production animal and equine practice. Additionally, the role includes tasks related to the prevention of animal diseases and participation in the supervision of the Animal Welfare Act, either as a partner to the supervisory veterinarian or in their absence. During working hours, tasks are shared between two municipal veterinarians, and a part-time clinic assistant supports the practitioner veterinarians. All Mikkeli region environmental service clinics are equipped with X-ray, ultrasound, and basic laboratory equipment. The eligibility requirement for the municipal veterinarian position is a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Finland. Those who completed their degree in other EU/EEA countries are additionally required to have completed the official veterinarian course.
