The Strategy Department is responsible for long-term social policy planning, coordinating the national implementation of sustainable development and national research, development, and innovation (RDI) policy, preparing the government's strategic work and action plan, and supporting the government in cross-administrative tasks requiring a holistic perspective. The Strategy Department includes the secretariats of the Research and Innovation Council and the Sustainable Development Committee, for which a joint trainee is now being recruited. The Research and Innovation Council supports the Government in developing research and innovation policy, makes initiatives regarding RDI policy, monitors changes in the operating environment, and promotes the international image of research and innovation policy. Prime Minister Orpo's government has made significant additional investments in the funding of research and development activities during the government term. The Council is responsible for monitoring this funding and assessing its impacts. The Council's secretariat also serves as the secretariat for the parliamentary RDI monitoring group and leads several cross-administrative working groups. The Sustainable Development Committee is a participatory forum led by the Prime Minister for the implementation of sustainable development. In addition to supporting the committee's work, the committee's secretariat is responsible for coordinating the national implementation of Agenda 2030 and the sustainable development goals within the Government. In the secretariat of the Research and Innovation Council, the trainee will participate in advancing the council's work and preparing the second monitoring report on the state's research and development funding. The first report was published on the council's pages in spring 2026: https://valtioneuvosto.fi/tutkimus-ja-innovaationeuvosto. In the secretariat of the Sustainable Development Committee, the trainee will participate, among other things, in the planning, implementation, and reporting of meetings and other events for the committee and the government's sustainable development coordination network. The trainee will support the implementation of the committee's 2025-2027 action plan and actively participate in the planning and implementation of the committee's communications.
