About the role

At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes. Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat. The work As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will design, develop, and validate mechanical components and systems for IQM's quantum computers. You will transform concepts into reliable, production-ready solutions while ensuring performance, manufacturability, and quality. You will take ownership of technical projects within your area of expertise, contribute to engineering decisions, and collaborate closely with the Mechanical Engineering Team Lead and multidisciplinary teams to deliver next-generation quantum computing systems. What you'll actually do - Design, develop, and document mechanical components and systems, including system layout, framing, mounting, cable routing, and cryogenics. - Use CAD tools for modelling and analysis. - Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, including GD&T drawings, 3D models, and Bill of Materials (BOMs), using CAD software. - Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to align on design requirements. - Lead and arrange design review sessions, communicate engineering options clearly, and engage in specific communication with manufacturers and suppliers as needed. - Prepare detailed documentation including production drawings, assembly instructions, component datasheets, and compliance documents. Ensure all mechanical aspects are well-documented for warehousing, logistics, and regulatory compliance. - Prepare and manage regulatory compliance documentation for mechanical aspects of the products. - Assemble the first batch of prototype hardware to validate fit, function, and system integration based on current design specifications. - Lead technical projects and own specific mechanical engineering work packages from concept through production, ensuring technical quality and successful delivery while aligning with team priorities. - Take ownership of complex mechanical design challenges, driving solutions that balance performance, manufacturability, reliability, and scalability. - Contribute technical expertise during design reviews, evaluate engineering options, and support decision-making across multidisciplinary teams. - Share technical knowledge and support the development of colleagues through design discussions, reviews, and collaboration while working closely with the Mechanical Engineering Team Lead. - Drive continuous improvements in mechanical design methodologies, engineering standards, documentation practices, and development processes. What we're looking for - Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. - At least 5 years of experience in mechanical design and development of industrial or commercial products. - Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and Vault, or similar CAD and PDM tools. - Strong experience in mechanical design, CAD modelling, technical documentation, and developing production-ready components. - Good understanding of manufacturing processes, structural analysis, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles. - Experience managing engineering documentation, design changes, and regulatory compliance. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex design challenges. - Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, and manufacturing partners. - Ability to take ownership of technical projects and engineering deliverables, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and contribute to continuous improvement in engineering practices. - Demonstrated experience owning mechanical engineering projects or major engineering work packages from concept to production while collaborating with engineering leads and cross-functional teams. - Experience providing technical guidance, sharing knowledge, or supporting the development of engineers in a collaborative engineering environment. Nice to have - Experience with cryogenic, vacuum, or microwave technologies. - Experience developing precision hardware for scientific instrumentation, semiconductor, aerospace, medical devices, or other highly regulated engineering environments. Why IQM? - Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack. - High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours. - Never the smartest: Expect to learn constantly. You won't always be the smartest person in the room, and that's the point. - Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look! - The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed. - Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.
