Special Education Teaching Assistant

Job opening for a Special Education Teaching Assistant at Pitäjänmäen peruskoulu. The role focuses on guiding and supporting students through different stages of schooling and learning processes. Responsibilities include guiding students in the classroom and outside it (support is required for smaller classes for hearing-impaired and sign-language students in special classes and regular classes in grades 1–9), teamwork with a partner, acting as a tutor in a sign-language after-school program, supervising breaks, assisting students with taxi transport and reception from taxis, and excursions. Emphasis on collaboration skills and ability to work with diverse learners and knowledge of sign language. Experience with diabetes care, deafblindness, and use of augmentative communication methods is valued. Attendees participate in approximately five team-meetings per school year led by the team supervisor, and attend staff meetings in rotation. The school has about 480 students in grades 1–9, with a focus on movement, dance and expressive arts; ten special classes and one preparatory class; students include hard-of-hearing and sign-language users. Other staff include a counselor, psychologist, team supervisor, school coach, multilingual advisor and sign language interpreters. The position is 34 hours per week, part-time. Salary: 2318.51 EUR per month for a 34 h/week schedule, with possible additional allowances under KVTES. The salary may adjust with skills and responsibility. The role is with Helsinki City Education and Training, worksite varies depending on available resources and may change year by year. During school breaks staff participate in a centralized program for disabled children; the site may be at another Helsinki city school. Summer holidays are generally scheduled during the closing period of activities.
