Customs Officer

The Customs Control Department handles customs control tasks, including inspections related to foreign trade and travel ships, vehicles, cargo units, goods and passengers; regional risk analysis; warehouse and procedure inspections; crime control; CBRNe control; radiography and canine and vessel operations. The unit also carries out other security authority tasks, such as border control duties, issuing penalties, and cooperation with authorities and PTR networks, and provides customer-service style services at offices and by moving groups. The Customs Control Department is organized into two units: the Customs Control Expert Unit and the Operational Customs Control Unit; the department head sits with unit managers to form the department leadership team. The Operational Customs Control Unit comprises the national command center and four regional operations (southern, western, northern and eastern control). Apprenticeship recruitment duties belong to the Operational Customs Control Unit. The Western Control is responsible for executing the customs tasks in its area and other department duties; it comprises the Mariehamn customs office, the Southwest Finland Mobile Group and the West and Central Finland Mobile Group. The Western region’s patrols are carried out at the following offices: Turku, Mariehamna, Rauma, Pori, Vaasa, Kokkola and Tampere; Turku is the Western region’s main office. The vacancy is for a fixed-term position as Customs Inspector for the period 22.2.2027–21.8.2029 or 5.4.2027–4.10.2029. The duties include passenger, goods and vehicle traffic customs-control, and customs clearance for imports, exports and transits in commercial foreign trade; border-control tasks and cooperation with other authorities. The work areas focus on ports, airports, other border-crossing points and various warehouses where inspections and controls are carried out in a mobile operating model, utilizing various control technologies. Further training will be provided later according to the training path model, after the person has applied and been selected for specialised duties in customs after obtaining a qualification. You will be trained as a professional in the customs sector with an apprenticeship training. The professional qualification in customs is a secondary-level demonstration qualification. The training combines theory studies and on-the-job practice. Qualifications will give you good prospects of employment in Tulli’s diverse tasks. We are looking for a person who wants to develop themselves and learn new things; you are determined and commit to completing the qualification; you are proactive and do not fear taking initiative in demanding situations. In your work you will meet other people, so you should have a customer-service mindset. The duties include handling force-application equipment, regular participation in force-application training, night-shift work, and good management of various control situations. The tasks require good physical and mental capacity.
