As Senior Database Reliability Engineer, you will own the reliability, performance, scalability, and cost efficiency of Storyblok’s PostgreSQL data platform, primarily Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, and its supporting infrastructure and automation. This is a reliability engineering role rather than a traditional database administration role: managed services handle patching, backups, failover, and storage growth, while you lead query and index strategy, execution-plan analysis, configuration tuning, vacuum and bloat management, connection management, zero-downtime schema changes, logical replication, capacity planning, and cost modeling. You will diagnose and prevent query-plan regressions across major version upgrades, particularly on high-volume multi-tenant read paths. You will review backend teams’ schema changes and DDL for locking, migration safety, and performance impact, and develop the guardrails and tools that make safe changes the default. You will own backup, restore, and disaster recovery, including rehearsed restore drills and the access, encryption, and auditing controls required for compliance. You will model capacity and costs, including I/O-Optimized versus Standard, Serverless v2 sizing, and read-replica strategy. As a member of the Infrastructure team, you will deliver infrastructure and automation using Terraform and AWS cloud-native tooling, contribute to CI/CD pipelines and safe automated database changes, and build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability. Tools mentioned include pg_stat_statements, Prometheus exporters, Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, and Aikido for security and vulnerability management. You will participate in on-call, incident response, and postmortems, investigate root causes, and drive preventive remediation. You will work with backend and DevOps engineers, Security, product owners, and the Data team in a shared-ownership model, and build organization-wide database expertise through design reviews, documentation, runbooks, and mentoring. AI tools should be used thoughtfully to improve productivity, decisions, and work quality. The role requires at least seven years in database engineering, database reliability, infrastructure, or SRE, including substantial production PostgreSQL ownership. You should have deep PostgreSQL knowledge, including internals and MVCC, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS), indexing, vacuum, locking, pooling, and configuration; strong Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and AWS-managed database experience; and a proven record of zero-downtime upgrades and complex migrations on large, busy tables. Experience with physical and logical replication, partitioning, read scaling, and backup and disaster-recovery design is required. You also need Terraform and AWS infrastructure-as-code experience, strong Linux fundamentals, scripting ability in at least one of Bash, Python, Ruby, or Go, monitoring and observability experience, security knowledge covering IAM, secrets management, and network segmentation, and experience with production change, incident, and problem management, Git, and modern CI/CD for database changes. Strong written and spoken communication, willingness and ability to join the on-call rotation, and a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field—or equivalent practical experience—are required. Helpful additional experience includes PostgreSQL-connected backend frameworks (especially Ruby on Rails, as well as Python, Rust, or Elixir), Redis or Memcached, analytics pipelines and warehouses such as Redshift, Snowflake, or ClickHouse, CDC data flows, ECS, EKS, Fargate, NoSQL or vector databases, and AWS Database Specialty or DevOps Engineer Professional certification. The job is fully remote, with the option of working from home or using a Storyblok-funded coworking space. Benefits include a monthly remote-work stipend for home internet and electricity, initial home-office equipment and later an equipment upgrade or coworking membership, sick leave and parental leave benefits, 25 days of annual leave plus local national holidays, a personal development fund, an annual international team-building trip, quarterly and monthly online get-togethers, and flexible schedules. Storyblok emphasizes work-life balance, inclusion, and an international team environment. For application accommodations, contact talent.acquisition@storyblok.com.
