Location: Sodankylä, office premises in the municipal centre.
Work model: mainly on-site, with 1–2 remote days per week.

Agnico Eagle and the Ikkari gold mine project
Agnico Eagle Finland is part of the world’s second-largest gold producer, with mines in four countries. In Finland, the company operates Europe’s largest gold mine in Kittilä and is developing the Ikkari gold mine project in Sodankylä. Its operations are built on the resources of an international group and more than 20 years of experience in exploration, mine construction and operations in Lapland.
Ikkari is an exceptionally large gold mine project by Finnish and European standards. The 2025 pre-feasibility study estimated average annual production of 227,000 ounces of gold during the first ten production years. The project is in the research and design phase and offers an opportunity to influence a new mine’s technical solutions from the outset. Ikkari is central to Agnico Eagle’s growth in Finland, where the company sees the potential to develop an annual gold production centre of approximately 500,000 ounces over the next decade.
Responsibilities
As Engineering Manager, you are responsible for the project’s technical whole. You ensure that the different design disciplines work in accordance with shared input data, objectives and design criteria. Your goal is a technically feasible, permit-ready solution documented to the level required for cost estimation.
You report to the Ikkari Project Manager. Your direct reports are the leads of the process, water, tailings, geotechnical, mine and external infrastructure design disciplines. External consultants perform the actual design work, which you guide together with the discipline leads. You also work closely with procurement, the environmental and permitting team, financial modelling and project controls.
Key duties include leading multidisciplinary design and consultants; managing design scope, schedules and hour budgets and ensuring sufficient resources; establishing, approving and managing changes to design criteria and coordinating interfaces; technically guiding consultants and approving design documents and deliverables.
You lead technical reviews, ensure findings are closed, arrange independent reviews of critical solutions, and manage technical risks and mitigation actions. You guide comparisons of implementation options and prepare and present technical recommendations to the project steering group. You make technical decisions within approved design criteria and escalate changes affecting scope, cost or schedule to the Project Manager and, when needed, the steering group.
You ensure the technical basis for the capital cost estimate, including equipment lists, masses, quantities and required documentation. You manage design documents and track the readiness of deliverables. You ensure that technical material required for permit applications and the EIA process is delivered to the environmental and permitting team on time. In the early phase, coordination between design and permitting is emphasised. Key milestones include submitting the EIA report and preparing an updated pre-feasibility study; you ensure technical design material is ready to the required schedule.
What Agnico Eagle expects
You have strong experience leading technical design for demanding mining projects and can understand the whole formed by different design disciplines. You can organise and prioritise work, take solutions through decision-making, and guide experts and consultants towards shared goals.
You should have a suitable engineering or Master of Science in Engineering degree, for example in process, mining, mechanical or civil engineering; strong, preferably approximately ten years’ experience in mining-project development phases such as PFS, FS and DFS; more than five years’ experience leading multidisciplinary design, supporting technical decision-making and coordinating study-phase deliverables; a strong project background and ability to keep work progressing to agreed schedules; understanding of the Nordic permitting environment; good collaboration and interaction skills; and fluent Finnish and English.
Practical experience in EIA and permitting is an advantage but not essential, as the project’s own specialists are responsible for permitting. Relevant experience may have been gained in mining projects, a consulting firm or a mining-industry technology supplier.
Success in Agnico Eagle’s people-oriented workplace is based on collaboration, respect for others and achieving shared goals. The company values a responsible, goal-oriented approach and commitment to the long-term development of the project.
What Agnico Eagle offers
Agnico Eagle offers a key role in the technical leadership of the Ikkari project and the opportunity to influence design solutions and project decisions. You will be supported by a multidisciplinary project team and the expertise of an international group. Long-term project development will expand your expertise, and internal transfers and international roles may create future career opportunities.
Agnico Eagle Finland is known as one of Lapland’s best employers. In Sodankylä, you will join a growing, close-knit workplace where people work together with an approachable and positive spirit. A strong safety culture and care for the environment guide daily operations, and you can develop your work and shared practices.
Employment benefits include an affordable gym membership, Epassi, comprehensive occupational health services and medical expense insurance, as well as the opportunity to participate in a share programme and personnel fund. The company aims to assist with housing arrangements according to its practices. Lapland’s nature and varied recreational opportunities also provide a good setting for leisure time.
