Prison Officer

Hämeenlinnan vankila is part of the Häme and Pirkanmaa Criminal Sanctions Centre. We are a modern, 120-bed closed female prison and Finland’s largest facility focusing on the special needs of female inmates. On the same campus there is a 38-bed prison hospital, and our operations will soon expand with a new annex adding 32 more inmate places. As our operations grow, we are strengthening our staff. We are now seeking five permanent prison officers to join our skilled team. As a prison officer, you work in a role that supports safety, rehabilitation, and a crime-free life. The work is varied and responsible and requires good situational awareness, interpersonal skills, and the ability to engage with people in different life situations. The work at Hämeenlinna Prison is primarily on-site. Daily you interact with inmates, monitor their situation and functioning, and support them in achieving their prison-time goals. Alongside maintaining security, the role emphasises professional interaction, clear boundaries, and the ability to remain calm and consistent in challenging situations. Your duties also include intake and release-related tasks, inspections, transports and escorts, and other security duties. You actively observe factors affecting prison safety, anticipate risks, and act according to agreed procedures in emergencies. You work closely with other prison officers as well as prison administration staff, social services, health care and other professionals. The aim of multidisciplinary cooperation is a safe time in custody and supporting the inmate’s rehabilitation and readiness for a crime-free life. Hämeenlinna Prison is a women’s facility, so the role also requires understanding the specific needs of female inmates. You will encounter issues related to life management, substance use, mental health, relationships and parenthood. The role requires the ability to combine security, professional interaction, and individualized engagement.
