Watershed Coordinator
Watershed coordinator for ACWA LIFE, coordinating restoration and stakeholder collaboration in Mikkeli or Kuopio.
We are seeking a Watershed Coordinator for the ACWA LIFE project. As Watershed Coordinator, you will be responsible for implementing water-management measures in the Virtasalmi–Joroinen demonstration area and coordinating the project-wide Task 3.2 package of measures, which tests different watershed steward models in pilot areas. Your duties include coordinating and advancing water-management measures in the Virtasalmi–Joroinen demonstration area. You will also work as the watershed steward in the area. You will identify and prioritise restoration sites in the watershed and advance them towards implementation. Restoration measures will also be directed directly at water bodies through stream and lake restoration. The Centre for Economic Development of Eastern Finland is responsible for the restoration measures implemented in the project. You will also take part in implementing innovative restoration methods, such as hypolimnetic water exchange in a lake, in cooperation with, among others, the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). You will build and maintain a cooperation network involving municipalities, associations, joint property management associations, businesses, research organisations and authorities. You will organise and facilitate working groups, events and field meetings. You will promote collaboration between different actors and reconcile diverse perspectives to achieve water-management objectives. You will monitor the progress and impacts of measures and be responsible for project reporting and communications for the Virtasalmi–Joroinen demonstration area and ACWA LIFE Task 3.2. The Watershed Coordinator will contribute to international development and implementation of watershed steward activities in cooperation with water-protection projects in the coastal countries of the Baltic Sea. The coordinator will also participate in a national network of strategic LIFE projects, which aims to strengthen cooperation between projects and develop increasingly impactful LIFE projects. The work is highly interactive, mobile and practical. Day-to-day work includes, for example, cooperation with landowners and stakeholders, field visits, assessing restoration sites, preparing water-management measures and advancing their implementation, and organising collaborative events. In this role, you can make a tangible contribution to improving the condition of water bodies and build new cooperation models that can increase the long-term impact of water-management work. We offer you the opportunity to work on a project funded by the European Union LIFE programme, whose aim is to improve the condition of Finland’s waters comprehensively. The project develops and establishes watershed-based water management and implements the measures needed to improve the condition of waters. Its aim is to remove obstacles and bottlenecks that have slowed the progress of water-management measures and the achievement of objectives. Further information about the project: https://elinvoimakeskus.fi/acwa-life. The position is located in the Rural Affairs, Fisheries and Environment Department, Environment Unit, Water Management Group of the Centre for Economic Development of Eastern Finland and is connected to the implementation of ACWA LIFE in the Virtasalmi–Joroinen demonstration area. The position is a fixed-term project role. The work location is Mikkeli or Kuopio.
