We are now recruiting multiskilled process industry workers of the future for an approximately two-year apprenticeship programme at UPM Communication Papers' Kymi paper mill. The programme starts in January 2027. Those selected will be offered permanent employment and high-quality classroom-based theoretical training to strengthen their versatile professional skills. Cooperation with supervisors and colleagues works well, and the workplace instructors have also been excellent!” What you will do At the paper mill, you will work in production and maintenance across different stages of the production process, from pulp reception to operating the paper machine and finishing. • You will become familiar with the different work stages of paper production and take part in daily production work in various departments. Tasks include, for example, receiving and preparation work in the raw-materials department; operating paper and coating machines; and finishing-area operations involving supercalendering, slitting and roll packaging. At the Kymi mill, tasks also include sheet and foil cutting and work in the paper warehouse. • Maintenance is a central part of this varied role. The work includes rounds in the production areas, equipment inspections, servicing and maintenance. Examples include changing and servicing rollers, lubrication and condition monitoring, replacing and servicing various equipment and components, and troubleshooting. Working hours Most production employees at the paper mill work continuous three-shift schedules. Shifts are eight hours long, generally in a rotation of two morning shifts from 06:00 to 14:00, two evening shifts from 14:00 to 22:00 and two night shifts from 22:00 to 06:00, followed by four days off. Who you are • You have a suitable technical vocational qualification in electrical engineering, automation, process technology, or mechanical and production engineering. • Previous practical work experience in process industry and maintenance (mechanical maintenance or electrical and automation maintenance) is an advantage. • You are strongly motivated to develop your professional skills and interested in studying maintenance topics during the training. • You take initiative and responsibility and are able to make decisions in changing process conditions. • You enjoy teamwork and respond flexibly to changing situations in the work community. • You are able to work shifts. • You communicate fluently in Finnish. English language skills are an advantage. Pay Pay for an apprenticeship student is based on a local pay-system agreement and develops according to competence and personal performance. For an experienced production employee with good professional skills and competence, regular-hours annual earnings at UPM paper mills in continuous three-shift work are approximately €55,000–€60,000. Pay for the work is determined by its demands, individual competence and work performance. In addition, employees are covered by UPM's incentive pay scheme.
