Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and scale core backend systems that power Lightning AI’s platform. The Core Platform team builds foundational services including authentication, APIs, multi-tenancy, resource management, and developer tooling. The role involves designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend services, developing APIs and platform services, improving reliability, observability, scalability, and performance, collaborating with product, infrastructure, and AI engineering teams, evaluating and improving architecture and processes, and mentoring engineers to establish engineering best practices. The position is based in one of our office hubs (San Francisco, New York City, or London) with a minimum of two in-office days per week and occasional offsites; visa sponsorship is not available at this time.

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services powering Lightning AI Studio.
- Develop APIs and platform services supporting authentication, resource management, multi-tenancy, and developer workflows.
- Improve reliability, observability, scalability, and performance across core platform infrastructure.
- Partner closely with product, infrastructure, and AI engineering teams to deliver new platform capabilities.
- Evaluate and improve technical architecture, engineering processes, and operational tooling.
- Mentor engineers and help establish engineering best practices across the organization.
Requirements
- Extensive experience building scalable backend systems using Go, Python, Rust, React or similar languages.
- Strong experience designing and operating distributed systems or cloud-native services.
- Experience building APIs, platform services, and infrastructure that other engineers depend on.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, and modern cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Strong understanding of software quality, automated testing, observability, and continuous delivery.
- Proven ability to lead technical initiatives from architecture through production.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and design.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous startup environment.
