About the role

Lead, Data Governance role description is derived from the posting content: This position is responsible for building and running Alpaca's data governance and data security program across the lakehouse, analytics tools, and internal data products. The candidate will set standards for data classification, access control, and data protection, collaborating with Data Engineering and Data Science to implement these standards. The role involves managing data access governance for the lakehouse and analytics stack, defining entitlement standards, conducting periodic access reviews, and enforcing least-privilege access across tools like Trino, Ranger, Cube, Metabase, and related systems. The person will work with Data Engineering on the technical aspects of controls, set data quality standards, maintain metadata and lineage documentation for compliance and audits, and review data-related vendor and use-case scenarios with Security, Privacy, and Legal. They will support sensitive cross-border data requests, including PII handling and regional data flows, and prepare evidence for SOC 2, ISO 27001, CSA STAR, partner security reviews, and regulatory exams. The role is remote, individual-contributor with no direct reports, reporting to the CISO, with a dotted-line to Data Engineering and Data Science. Must-haves include 5+ years in data governance/ security/ GRC/ privacy engineering or related, 2+ years with modern data platforms, knowledge of DAMA-DMBOK/NIST, experience building classification/access programs, familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP a plus), privacy/regulatory requirements in financial services, and ability to work with engineering teams. Nice-to-haves include fintech/regulatory background and experience with Trino, Apache Ranger, dbt, Cube, Metabase, Airflow, or Iceberg. Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain data governance policies and classification standards
  • Own data access governance for lakehouse and analytics stack
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering on technical controls
  • Set data quality standards and track improvements
  • Maintain data inventory, metadata and lineage documentation
  • Review data-related vendors and use cases with Security/Privacy/Legal
  • Support cross-border data requests and PII handling
  • Prepare evidence for SOC 2/ISO 27001/CSA STAR regulatory exams
  • Track data risks and gaps within ERM program
  • Be go-to governance partner for data and security on access and tooling
  • Define guardrails as AI usage expands

Requirements

  • 5+ years in data governance, data security, GRC, privacy engineering, or related field
  • At least 2 years working with modern data platforms (lakehouse/warehouse, SQL engines, BI, semantic layers)
  • Solid grasp of data governance frameworks (DAMA-DMBOK, NIST, or similar) and how to apply them in a fast-moving company
  • Built or run data classification, access control, or entitlement review programs
  • Familiar with cloud data platforms (GCP a plus) and typical analytics tooling
  • Working knowledge of privacy and regulatory requirements in financial services (GDPR, CCPA, cross-border transfers)
  • Experience supporting SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar audits
  • Ability to work with engineering teams without bottlenecking
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable in fast-paced remote environment
  • Comfortable as an IC with no direct reports
