About the Team: The Research team develops the model and decision-making stack powering Decagon’s conversational agents for enterprise support, researching and implementing state-of-the-art techniques in training, prompting, orchestration, and evaluation to improve accuracy, robustness, and efficiency. About the Role: As a Staff Research Engineer, you’ll build industry-leading conversational AI models from idea to production, own multi-quarter initiatives to increase reliability, capability, and efficiency, and design frontier approaches for training, evaluation, and orchestration. You will lead, ship improvements, and make high-impact technical decisions. In this role you will: lead research and engineering to improve core conversational capabilities in production (instruction following, retrieval, memory, long-horizon tasks); build end-to-end models and pipelines; partner with platform and product engineers to integrate models; break down ambiguous ideas into milestones; mentor others and set direction. Your background looks like: 10+ years in AI/ML engineering or research; experience deploying LLMs in production; fluency in Python and ML tooling; track record of turning ideas into production impact; ability to define roadmaps and lead cross-functional execution. Compensation: $200K – $400K + equity; final compensation varies by location within the United States.
