Intendent

Would you like to work in a unique environment leading people, acting for animals, and being closely involved in tourism business? We are seeking an intendant substitute for Ranua Zoo for a year-long study-leave position. The role entails operational leadership of animal care, supervising staff, developing practices, and serving as the supervisor for animal care personnel, maintenance, and outreach education. You will combine practical leadership, personnel work, strategic development, and safety in a demanding and distinctive setting. Key responsibilities include participating in strategy development and implementing agreed goals, organizing and supervising the animal care team with the team leader as your partner, developing care methods and processes, improving safety and risk management, planning resources and activities, collaborating with other zoo functions, management, and external stakeholders, handling animal collection management and transfers, and participating in species conservation activities. Qualifications include a background in animal care or zoo operations or a closely related field, prior supervisory experience, ability to lead operations in changing situations, strong safety and risk management mindset, good collaboration and organizational skills, independence, responsibility, and solution-oriented approach, and proficiency in Finnish and English. A suitable university degree is required (e.g., animal science, ecology, evolutionary biology); personal attributes and experience are valued.
