Prison Officer

Mikkelin Prison is a 110-bed facility functioning as a closed prison for investigations and enforcement, located in the center of Mikkeli. The prison has specialized in sexual offences and fine-detention. About 77 people work at Mikkeli Prison. The guard's task is to maintain safety and order and ensure daily operations. The guard is responsible for monitoring and maintaining order, guiding and orienting inmates, and ensuring smooth day-to-day activities while contributing to their development. The role involves working at different posts according to the prison's needs—in the ward, control room or gate. The goal is to support inmates' life management and reintegration into society, and to promote readiness for a crime-free lifestyle. As a prison officer you work in a social profession and a key aspect of your job is presence and interaction. You ensure daily life runs smoothly in the prison, contribute to prison security and activities, follow the prison rules, daily schedule and given instructions. Duties include security checks as well as substance abuse and situational monitoring. Tasks include security, surveillance and transport duties inside and outside the prison, guiding and advising inmates, supporting implementation of the sentence plan and participating in service guidance. The job also includes preparing various permits, recording and presenting matters. The prison officer works in close multiprofessional cooperation with different operations and staff within the prison. The role emphasizes active interaction with inmates.
