Nuorisotyö is a statutory task under the Youth Act in municipalities. In accordance with the Youth Act Vaasa city creates prerequisites for youth work and for youth-led activities. The Youth Services provide services and spaces for Young people under 29 in Vaasa and support youth civic activities. The fundamental plan for youth services aims to support youth growth and independence, strengthen social skills, promote equality, participation and community, and support youths’ role in society and their opportunities to realize their own dreams. The services, spaces and activities should be accessible and safe for participation and recreation, and sustainability principles are considered. Youth work promotes the wellbeing of young people. Vaasa City’s youth services employ almost 40 youth workers in various roles. The role of the guide is embedded in the community-based youth work service unit whose goal is to strengthen youths’ social skills, participation and community. The guide mainly works at the Vaasa skate hall. The hall is a safe, non-discriminatory space where everyone is welcome regardless of skill level, gender or background. The guide also helps youths organize their own events, competitions and workshops. The guide is responsible for overall safety in the hall, ensuring rules are followed, equipment loans, and cleanliness, in collaboration with youths. The position requires ability to work independently and in a team, and ability to work with different individuals and partners. Ability to justify decisions and to give/receive feedback is required. Work is mainly evening shifts. A vocational qualification in the field is required, for example a basic qualification in youth and leisure guiding or a basic qualification in education and guidance. Excellent command of one domestic language is required; knowledge of the other domestic language and English is considered a merit. Merits include pedagogical skills and good social skills, experience of youth work and meeting youths in different environments, and cultural understanding of skate culture. Salary is determined according to the KVTES pay grade system. Probation is three months. The chosen candidate must present a criminal record extract in accordance with Act 504/2002 before starting.
