Youth worker at Eira Adult Upper Secondary School; requires a relevant degree or vocational qualification and experience.

Original job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, active and experienced youth worker for the school and educational-institution youth work unit, for a fixed-term role from 1 January 2027 to 31 July 2028, to launch and deliver educational-institution youth work at Eira Adult Upper Secondary School as part of the educational-institution youth work team. School and educational-institution youth work has gradually become permanent in Helsinki, but its expansion and development continue, including through fixed-term funding. The modelling and development of the work are carried out jointly within the permanent school and educational-institution youth work unit. As a youth worker, your duties include meeting and supporting young people using youth-work methods in and outside the everyday life of the educational institution. The work includes activities for the whole school community as well as individual young people and groups, and takes shape according to young people’s needs and the situation at the institution. You work independently with young people and in multidisciplinary collaboration with other professionals as part of the school’s educational and well-being responsibilities. You will have a significant influence on the content and ways of carrying out your work and on how school and educational-institution youth work takes shape in Helsinki. The work takes place mainly during school hours, but partly also during young people’s free time. We are looking for a youth worker who wants to do high-quality youth work and multidisciplinary collaboration for the benefit of young people. Because of its independent nature, the work can at times be hectic and challenging, but it is also inspiring and rewarding. Regular team meetings and work supervision, among other things, support development and well-being at work. Youth workers work as part of an educational-institution youth work team led by a team supervisor. The team is part of the school and educational-institution youth work unit. At Eira Adult Upper Secondary School, we will focus especially on recently arrived young people aged 17–18 who are completing the basic education syllabus, as well as young people aged 16–28 studying in preparatory basic education groups and TUVA groups. As a youth worker, you will help build youth-centred educational-institution youth work by supporting young people’s participation, agency and peer relationships. In the role, you will carry out and apply the City of Helsinki’s basic plan for youth work in the everyday life of the school or educational institution. You will be part of the school’s communal student welfare work and, at the same time, act as a link between school and free time. To succeed in the role, you need: - Readiness to apply youth work in a new operating environment as the sole representative of our profession. - The desire and readiness to work for young people through multidisciplinary collaboration during school and free time. - An independent approach, the ability to manage your own work, and resilience to cope with a hectic everyday environment and changing situations. - The ability to develop yourself and the work, sound judgement and an open-minded approach. The eligibility requirement is a suitable university of applied sciences degree, for example a Bachelor of Humanities in Community Education, OR a vocational qualification as a youth worker and at least three years of work experience in youth work. We also value experience of working with schools and an understanding of the school environment. With us, you will have the opportunity to develop and use your skills. We offer meaningful work, the support of a skilled work community and wonderful young people. As an employee of the City of Helsinki, you will also receive a wide range of staff benefits. The city offers leisure benefits, including an extensive range of staff sports activities and the Epassi sports and culture benefit, a lunch benefit, a commuter travel benefit and discounts at various shops. Before accepting the position, the selected person must provide the employer with a criminal records extract under section 6, subsection 2 of the Criminal Records Act, as well as a certificate relating to a drug test. Interviews will be held on 2 November 2026. Submit your application through our recruitment system.
