Doctoral Researcher

The Faculty of Social Sciences and the History, Philosophy and Literary Studies Unit (HiFi), Tampere University invites applications for two Doctoral Researcher positions. The duration of the employment is from six months to four years fixed-term. Selected Doctoral Researchers must begin work between 1 January to 2 August 2027 and are expected to complete their dissertation by the end of the employment. The History, Philosophy and Literary Studies Unit is an umbrella for research and teaching in humanities at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The doctoral programmes in history, philosophy and literary studies provide a supportive and well-established research environment and an active seminar culture for completing a doctoral degree. The unit hosts several research centres and participates in Centres of Excellence. The positions are located in the Doctoral Programmes in History, Literary Studies and Philosophy. Job description: The applicants selected in the positions will pursue a doctoral degree in one of the doctoral programs of the History, Philosophy and Literary Studies Unit at Tampere University. The expected duration of full-time studies is four years. Fixed-term contracts may be from six months to four years depending on stage of studies and expected graduation date. The position is primarily for applicants who have not previously received funding for doctoral studies or the funding period has been less than four years. The terms of the dissertation work are defined in the annual work plan and supervision plan. Annual progress reports are required. In addition to dissertation work, doctoral researchers are expected to teach or perform other duties related to their studies. These duties may not exceed five per cent of total working hours. Requirements: Candidates should have a completed higher university degree and be already registered as a doctoral student in one of the doctoral programs of the History, Philosophy and Literary Studies Unit, Tampere University. Selection is based on scientific quality and innovativeness of the research plan, feasibility of the proposed research, merits of the applicant, supervisory arrangement and research environment, and motivation. Salary will be based on the University Salary System with job demands levels 2–4 and performance-based pay. The starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher typically ranges between 2700 and 2800 euros per month. The position is based in Finland, and the work must be performed in Finland.
