Backend Engineer

We are looking for a Principal Backend Engineer (JAVA/PAM) to help build a new-generation platform for a leading online gaming and betting business. This is a great opportunity where you will have significant influence over the architecture, engineering standards, and future backend organisation. You will be hands-on with Java while helping establish the foundations for a platform designed to handle large transaction volumes with high availability, low latency, and strong data integrity. The platform will cover critical areas including player accounts, wallets, payments, transaction processing, bonuses, and compliance-related services. What You'll Do Lead the architecture and development of core backend and platform services. Design and build high-performance transactional systems using Java. Define service boundaries, APIs, data models, integration patterns, and event-driven architecture. Solve complex problems around consistency, idempotency, transaction integrity, scalability, and failure handling. Build systems capable of handling high volumes and demanding sportsbook/betting peaks. Design integrations with payment gateways, payment providers, and third-party platforms. Establish engineering standards around testing, observability, reliability, CI/CD, and code quality. Contribute hands-on code while providing technical leadership and mentoring senior engineers. Help shape the backend engineering organisation as the platform grows. Support the migration from existing third-party technology where required. What We're Looking For 10+ years of backend engineering experience, including significant Staff/Principal-level architecture ownership. Expert Java knowledge and strong understanding of the modern JVM, including performance, concurrency, and memory management. Proven experience building high-throughput, high-performance transactional systems. Experience with wallets, payments, ledgers, account management, billing, trading, or similar money-moving platforms. Strong experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including performance and scaling. Solid distributed-systems knowledge, including event-driven architecture, Kafka or similar technologies, idempotency, sagas/outbox patterns, and failure handling. Experience taking a greenfield platform from initial architecture through to production. Experience integrating backend platforms with payment gateways and external providers. Excellent English communication skills. Highly Desirable iGaming, sportsbook, PAM, wallet, payments, or wider gaming-platform experience. Experience working in regulated or high-volume transactional environments. Knowledge of KYC/AML, responsible gaming, or regulatory requirements. Kubernetes and cloud experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Experience migrating away from a third-party platform. PAM experience is a strong advantage, but not essential.
