Our teams have built solid production systems, and we've reached the point where centralizing reliability expertise (observability, SLOs, resilience patterns) will take us to the next level. We're creating a new SRE stream within our Backend Platform team (BAP), and we're looking for someone who wants to define what that function looks like. You'll shape the tooling, practices, and standards that help our engineering org operate with more confidence at scale. What you will do You'll work in a team with a dual mandate: maintaining and evolving our backend platform (root modules, standard libraries, Spring Boot frameworks) while building out a new SRE stream. The two are deeply connected. Our shared HTTP starter already has circuit breakers and bulkheads baked in, and observability instrumentation lives in the same libraries. Your main responsibilities will be: Own the observability stack: Take ownership of the full chain: metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, dashboards. Make it so developers get useful observability for free by using the standard stack, and extending it is straightforward. Extend the SLO framework: We have latency SLOs in place; availability is next. You'll mature our SLO practice into the shared language for reliability-vs-feature tradeoffs across the org. Run reliability reviews: Work proactively with product teams to find blind spots and resiliency gaps. You're an invited expert who helps, not an inspector who grades homework. Standardize for resilience: Build patterns like circuit breakers, retries, timeouts, bulkheads, and graceful degradation directly into the platform so the resilient path is the easy path. You start consultative: building trust, proving value, earning credibility with product teams. Over time, with organizational backing, this evolves into a more structured practice, including production readiness reviews, reliability standards, and error budget-driven conversations. Who you are You're a senior backend engineer who's deeply curious about how systems behave in production, not just how they're designed to behave. You've built and operated large-scale production systems and know what it takes to keep them running well. You think in platform terms. You'd rather solve a problem once for 30 teams than fix it once for one. You can sell, not just build. This role is as much about influencing teams who aren't used to external input on their production posture as it is about writing code. You build trust before you build tools. You care about developer experience. Reducing friction for your colleagues is a feature, not a side effect. You have strong experience with Java and Spring Boot. Familiarity with GCP, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and frontend technologies like React & TypeScript is a plus. Who are we?
