The City of Rovaniemi has 21 primary schools. Basic education is general education with both educational and upbringing responsibilities. The goal of basic education is to support students' growth as individuals and members of society, and to provide students with eligibility for further studies in secondary education. The role of the school assistant is to support students' learning and functioning in collaboration with teachers. The school assistant creates conditions for promoting students' mental and physical health as well as social well-being. Qualifications include a relevant higher education degree, vocational college degree, vocational qualification, or equivalent previous studies, a professional qualification or specialized professional qualification, and skills acquired through training or demonstrated through experience to work as a group leader for children. A person qualified to give classroom teaching, preschool education, special education, subject teaching, or to serve as a student counselor is also eligible to work as a school assistant. If the position cannot be filled with a qualified person, a temporary appointment may be made to a person with sufficient education and skills required for the task. Short-term substitutes can include, for example, students in education and youth work or other persons with adequate education and skills for the position. Substitutes are expected to have good cooperation and interaction skills, flexibility, and an initiative-driven work attitude. Additionally, applicants must be at least 18 years old and have sufficient Finnish language skills. Previous experience in similar roles and a student- and well-being-oriented approach are valued.
